Ana Gasteyer, who created the role of Elphaba for Chicago's production of Wicked, is currently playing a 13-week limited engagement as the misunderstood green-faced witch in the hit musical at the Gershwin Theatre. Ana talked with a Newsweek reporter about her switch from sketch comedy to theatre: "I wanted to improve the more disciplined parts of what I do. Singing requires enormous discipline. I studied voice in college." Gasteyer is mother of a 3-year-old girl who wears ruby slippers to sleep at night. Gasteyer suggests that foreshowed her work on Wicked. "I thought that was a good sign."

She studied at Northwestern University in Chicago and will be joined by Chicago actors as well as others from New York. Read more about Wicked's run (now ended) in Chicago where she first played Elphaba.

..Gastayer also played Fanny Brice in the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's production of Funny Girl and was recently seen in the New York City Opera mounting of Cinderella. Her screen credits include "Mean Girls," "What Women Want," "Woman on Top," "Dick" and "What's the Worst That Could Happen?"
