Hunchback headed for ABC TV

From Reuters: Friday May 11 1:28 AM ET Disney Playing Its 'Hunch' on ABC By Josef Adalian and Michael Schneider

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - ABC is developing a live-action musical version of ``The Hunchback of Notre Dame'' for the network's ``Wonderful World of Disney'' franchise. The project will draw from both the Disney animated feature version of ``Hunchback'' and the company's musical currently running in Berlin. ``Hunchback'' will revolve around the characters in Victor Hugo's 1831 novel about lonely and deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo and the lovely and talented Esmerelda. If the script is greenlit, a young Quasimodo is expected to be cast instead of the traditional middle-age lead. The tone of the project is expected to fall somewhere in between the lighthearted movie and the darker Berlin tuner. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz will write the music and lyrics for the project, as they did for the feature and musical.
