Stephen Schwartz's comments about "I'm Not That Girl"

Defying Gravity Behind-the-Scenes bookRead the full story of the making of Wicked in Defying Gravity Book on Wicked's Songwriter Stephen Schwartz. Here's one little "I'm Not That Girl" comment:

Carol de Giere's notes: Stephen Schwartz intentionally wrote a musically tentative end to the song. It ends on an E-major chord (dominant), rather than its root chord of A-major (the tonic chord). This makes the ending feel unresolved. It was partially inspired by hearing it four decades earlier on an of the folk group The Weavers.

In a music interview Stephen Schwartz said: "There's something about ending on the five that I think, first of all it's gorgeous, but secondly, I always remembered that because it was unusual when I first encountered it on the Weavers album. The sense of non-resolution is significant for the content of the song, of somebody whose experiencing ambivalence or isn't sure about what's going to happen. And I thought 'I'm Not That Girl' is exactly that. It's a statement that trails off. You know that she's saying she isn't, but she hopes she is. It's an ambivalent song, obviously, in a lot of ways, and therefore I thought it was good if it ended ambivalently, (which is nice for art but not so nice when you're trying to get a hand from the audience)."

"I'm Not That Girl" Lyrics from the Broadway Musical Wicked

"I'm Not That Girl" Lyrics

ELPHABA
Hands touch, eyes meet
Sudden silence, sudden heat
Hearts leap in a giddy whirl
He could be that boy
But I'm not that girl

Don't dream too far
Don't lose sight of who you are
Don't remember that rush of joy
He could be that boy
I'm not that girl

Ev'ry so often we long to steal
To the land of what-might-have-been
But that doesn't soften the ache we feel
When reality sets back in

Blithe smile, lithe limb
She who's winsome, she wins him
Gold hair with a gentle curl
That's the girl he chose
And Heaven knows
I'm not that girl

Don't wish, don't start
Wishing only wounds the heart
I wasn't born for the rose and the pearl
There's a girl I know
He loves her so
I'm not that girl...

"I'm Not That Girl" Reprise lyrics

GLINDA
Don't wish, don't start
Wishing only wounds the heart:
There's a girl I know
He loves her so
I'm not that girl....
